Welcome Northeastern District members!!  My name is Mark Foellmer and I am honored to be the President of the Northeastern District for the 2017 year.  I have been teaching Physical Education  (and Health for a short time as well) and coaching at Wentworth JHS in Calumet City for 23 years.  I have been very fortunate to spend my professional career in this great profession and feel lucky to be in a position to give back to this field.  I believe it is very important to help others and to serve the IAHPERD organization.   When I initially got involved with the NED and IAHPERD, I was lucky to have so many people take me under their wing and mentor me:  Heather Isler, Marilyn Bloechle, Vicky Nordhem, Kathy Houston, John David, Laura Duffy, Lori Dusek and Gina Parker to name a few.  These mentors taught me so much about how the organization works.  My professional network has continued to grow, along with my professional learning,  and my teaching abilities have blossomed exponentially.  In the end, my students have been the overall winners.

My goal, for the Northeastern District, is to increase participation at the district level.   I believe we need to continue to create growth in the organization, both at the district level and at the State levels.  Also, I believe people need to have purposeful involvement and service.  There are many committee opportunities at the Northeastern district level.  I encourage you to get involved.  The Northeastern district meets at the Roundheads Pizza in Lombard on Roosevelt at 7 pm.  Our schedule of meetings is posted on the Northeastern District portion of the IAHPERD website.

We have many events coming up:  Our Winter Workshop on Saturday, March 4th. The morning session we are honored to have world renowned Physical Education teacher and presenter Jo Bailey.  She will be sharing many tips and ideas that a Physical Education teacher can take back to their school and implement immediately.  The afternoon session will be a presentation on how to use the Brockport fitness assessment in your school setting.  You can register for one session for $25 or both sessions for $35.  What a deal.  Registration forms for the workshops are here: Jo Bailey’s activity workshop https://goo.gl/9TDp9Z; the Brockport Assessment workshop https://goo.gl/GSkRfO.

The Northeastern District offers $1000 grants, two awarded twice a year; Highlight Programs with a gift certificate award from Palos Sports for the winners, Teacher and Administrator Awards of the Year, a Gently Used Equipment program and college student scholarship opportunities.

I invite you to get involved.  If at any time you have a question or comment, please do not hesitate to contact me at gymrat2@comcast.net.  I hope to see many new faces at our upcoming NED meetings.

Thank you,

Mark Foellmer, NED President
