Shape Up Illinois
Are you interested in being a part of Shape Up but have some questions? Read the Q&A below.
This year we are in a unique position because the Enhanced PE Task Force has completed its work and submitted its Final Report to the Governor, State Legislators and ISBE; therefore, we can use their work/report this year as our focal point. The report includes updated Goals and Standards for Physical Development and Health as well as Recommendations for the implementation of Enhanced PE in Illinois schools. In addition to the EPE report we are preparing a bill to be introduced that would allow physical education and health teachers an avenue to become "Highly Qualified". There will be more information on this bill once it is introduced. Once again, IAHPERD members will have to do what we do best – teach. We will need to educate all legislators about the importance of what we do and why students need quality, daily physical education. Decisions that are made by legislators affect our students, our funding and our school communities. This is our one opportunity, as a group, to speak directly with the men and women that make those decisions. We need volunteers who are passionate about what we do as professionals. What we do in Springfield makes a difference!
What will I be asked to do?
You may need to drive down to Springfield the night before and attend a briefing meeting at the hotel. At this meeting, you will be given all of the ‘tools’ necessary to have a successful day in the Capitol (talking points, information and statistics). After a good night’s sleep and breakfast, some members will go to the Capitol and begin to meet with legislators and/or legislative aides (you may go in a group, with a partner or by yourself) and others will be involved in doing a ‘poster session’ with invited guests. In the afternoon, everyone will be in the capitol to meet with legislators. You may sign up to volunteer all day (8 am – 3 pm), or just the morning (8 am – noon) or just in the afternoon (11:30 am – 3 pm). If you are just volunteering for the afternoon session or live close enough to Springfield to ‘commute’ you will not need a hotel room.
What will it cost me?
NOTHING! IAHPERD will reimburse you mileage, will pay the hotel bill and provide evening snacks, breakfast and lunch on Wednesday. Tuesday’s dinner is on your own.
Who can participate?
Anyone who is a current member of IAHPERD can participate.
