Springfield, Il.

Please join us and help generate support for daily, quality, Physical Education and Health Education. Become part of our team and be a lobbyist for a day.

Why should I do it?

Decisions that are made by legislators affect our jobs, budgets, and our students. This is our one opportunity to speak directly with the men and women that make those decisions. We need volunteers who are passionate about our work and our students.

What would I need to do?

We will drive down to Springfield the night before and meet to brief you on the next
day. The committee will assign you a specific job taking into consideration your talents
and your comfort level with talking to legislators. Responsibilities may include behind
the scenes set up and organization, performing health screenings, greeting visitors, and
traveling to legislative offices to meet with Senators and State Representatives. We head for the capitol building in the morning and will begin our day around 8 AM. We should finish and break down to leave by 2PM.

What will it cost me?

IAHPERD will reimburse you for mileage, hotel room, and will provide snacks the night
before, breakfast in the morning, and lunch in the afternoon. The only thing that you
would need to do is to get a substitute for the day.

How will I know what to say to legislators?

We will prepare you with specific information and statistics relating to the importance of
daily, quality PE in our schools.

We need to promote our programs and let legislators see that the “new PE” is important in our schools and communities!

If you cannot attend, but would like to help:

We are looking for elementary, middle, and high schools to participate in a "run to the capitol." Schools can record student steps/miles from their school to the capitol. When they reach their goal, they can write letters to their home town state representative and senator titled, "Why PE is good for me." We will then deliver those letters to those legislators.

We are also looking for universities who would be willing to organize student volunteers to be dropped off 5-10 miles out of Springfield and run to the capitol to deliver letters.
