IAHPERD's bill to reduce waivers to 2 years for PE and allow only 2 renewals has passed out of House committee and will be called by Rep. Kevin Joyce any day now. If you have not already done so, please contact your House Rep in Springfield to ask for his/her support. Get phone numbers and some email addresses on www.ilga.gov
The following is an announcement from CLOCC and a Chicago group called Stakeholders Collaboration to Improve Student Health. If you live or teach in Chicago, note the town meeting on May 19th. The second section has a link to exercises to do in the classroom to boost test scores. Please share this flyer with your classroom colleagues. The 3rd section has information on a wellness conference in Oak Park on May 10th.
Speaking of May, you know it is Physical Fitness and Sport Month and the entire nation celebrates All Children Exercising Simultaneously on Wednesday, May 2nd. Have you planned your school's observance of ACES and National PF and Sport Month???? Find good ideas for ACES on www.iahperd.org Click on programs and aces.

Shaping America's Youth Town Hall Meeting |
Shaping America's Youth, the City of Chicago Inter-Departmental Task Force on Childhood Obesity, and CLOCC present a Town Hall Meeting on obesity in Chicago. More details are available here or from the Shaping America's Youth website.

The coordinators are especially seeking the participation of youth, age 14 and older. There are also opportunities to volunteer at the event or facilitate discussion groups. More information here. |
New Resources for Schools |
In March 2007, the Stakeholders Collaboration sent out ISAT Classroom Energizer Activities as part of the Walk Across Illinois School Fitness Project. The flyer has been uploaded to the Stakeholders website. The activities were taken from the Walk Across Illinois school curriculum. The activities are brief and are designed to occur within classrooms in between academic lessons. Please feel free to forward these to schools with which you work. |
The Midwest Dairy Council has nutrition education materials available for schools. More information is available here. The programs include five-food-group lessons focused on the new MyPyramid. Second and Fourth grade teachers get a Teacher's Guide with blackline masters, a colorful mini poster, four nutrition-based adventure games that reinforce nutrition concepts and immediate online access to all lessons. Individuals who are not Second or Fourth grade teachers can get free online access. |
School Wellness Resource |
Seven Generations Ahead will host From Wellness Policy to Wellness in Oak Park on May 10th. School administrators are encouraged to attend. The intent of the workshop is to help school stakeholders implement wellness initiatives. More information. |
