Jump Rope For Heart

Proposal for Basic and Applied Research Guidelines

Introduction:

The Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, in cooperation with the Illinois and Chicago Heart Associations, financially supports projects in basic and applied research through the Jump Rope for Heart Research Grant Program. Funding is derived from the JUMP ROPE FOR HEART (JRFH) program conducted annually within Illinois. The following guidelines outline the requirements and professional expectations of those who receive JRFH funds.

Funding Objectives:

Funded projects span the spectrum from basic and applied research in laboratory or clinical settings to development, implementation, and evaluation of novel professional/academic programs. Grants are awarded to individuals or groups of individuals to cover reasonable costs related to the project, within the limitation of annual JRFH program funding. Applicants must be members of IAHPERD or submit a membership application with the proposal. The problem(s) or focus of a project must be clearly defined. Proposals are judged according to the extent to which they apply to the broad areas encompassed within health and fitness, by the geographic location of the applicants, and by the targeted populations, with preference being given to the K-12 age group. Research Project Grants, both basic and applied, facilitate pursuit of a single scientific focus or objective in the area of the applicant's interest and expertise. A basic research grant should focus on the development of new knowledge. Some consideration is given to the utility of the project. Utility and immediate relevance to the field are of paramount importance in applied research grants. If you are interested in program development, advocacy or equipment purchases, apply for funding through the IAHPERD Program Enhancement.

General Considerations:

Projects are funded for a year at a time. Renewed funding, for a maximum of three years, is contingent on the availability of funds and the progress of a particular project. Funding for a project for any one year will not exceed 25% of the available funds for the fiscal year. Grants typically do not exceed $6000. Funds may be awarded to augment projects supported through other funding agencies. IAHPERD limits indirect costs to 3% of the total budget.

IAHPERD Expectations:

Recipients of JRFH funding are accountable for the completion of the project within the proposed time frame. When humans are involved in a research project, the applicant must affirm that informed consent will be obtained from all subjects (or parent or guardian). The project director must submit a report to the IAHPERD Grant Coordinator by December 31 of the year following receipt of the grant. Within two years of initial funding, recipients must present an oral report of the project at the IAHPERD Convention. and submit an abstract to the Illinois Journal. The Grant Coordinator will review each report to determine if the project has been carried out as planned. Failure to meet these responsibilities will result in forfeiting all remaining funds and prohibit future applications from the project director.

Grant Application Format:

Applications must be submitted electronically as email attachments in Word format. An application must conform to the following format: The proposal narrative (Sections A through G) cannot exceed eight typed, double-spaced pages in length. Documents over eight pages long will not be sent for review. Number each page. Use 8.5" x 11" page layout with 1" margins. Text can be no smaller than12 pt font. Include sections A through G as:

  1. ABSTRACT: Less than 150 words.
  2. INTRODUCTION: Provide an overview of the problem to be addressed by the project. Briefly, but thoroughly, describe and summarize related literature, works or previous programs which lead to the proposed project. Clarify how the proposed project will add new knowledge or how it relates to the needs of the target population.
  3. OBJECTIVES: State the specific objectives of the project and relate them to the needs previously identified. State objectives in measurable terms.
  4. PROCEDURES: Describe the nature of the program to be implemented, including subjects, instrumentation, project design and method of analysis.
  5. EVALUATION: Set a time line for the project. Describe how attaining the project objectives will be evaluated.
  6. REFERENCES: A minimum font size of 8 pt is acceptable for references
  7. BUDGET AND JUSTIFICATION:  No more than two pages long. All budget items must be justified. The maximum grant each year is typically around $6000, including a maximum indirect cost of 3%.

Use The Following Categories For Budget Itemization:

  • CONTRACTUAL SERVICES: Repair of equipment, including parts when billed with labor. Freight and express, when billed separately from other charges. Rentals. Postage. Photographic/video/transcription services.
  • PRINTING/STATIONERY: Printed forms, reports, pamphlets. Paper for duplicating or printing.
  • COMMODITIES (Expendables): Mechanical supplies and small tools. Repair and replacement parts and fittings and equipment. Classroom and lab supplies. Tapes/CDs/DVDs/Videos. Wearing apparel. Office supplies.
  • EQUIPMENT: Durables, such as machinery, major tools, scientific apparatus, photo/video equipment. Funding is provided only as it relates to completion of the project, not to purchase equipment for schools and/or school districts. These funds are available from the IAHPERD Program Enhancement .
  • TRAVEL: Transportation or mileage, hotel, and incidental costs incurred by persons traveling in connection with the project, including travel for presentation.
  • PERSONNEL: Wages for assistant(s), student help, work study, support staff, supervisory staff, or technical personnel associated with conducting the project. Funds cannot be used to support a principal investigator or co-investigator salary or tuition. Simply requesting a "Graduate Assistant" is not acceptable; specifically and thoroughly outline the tasks and hours to be performed by paid personnel.

Prioritize each item in case your entire budget cannot be funded.

JRFH Research Grant Funds may NOT be used for construction of facilities or purchase of property, for support of existing instruction, for expenditures not directly related to the project, for publication charges in connection with texts for sale, to pay tuition for anyone associated with the project.
