Work for the Beat

Introduction:

What is something that is continuously working, never takes a break, yet is the most important organ of your body? If you guessed the heart, then you are CORRECT!! The heart is something that humans take for granted everyday. Without it we would not be able to live and to partake in everyday life activities such as walking, talking, and playing with friends.
Today we will be taking a journey, using the internet, to discover what heart rate is, why it is important, and how we use it in our everyday lives.

Task:

Probing Question:
Heart Rate is an important aspect of our bodies, but why/how is it important to your everyday lives?

Learning Standards:

ISBE Standard 23.A.2: Identify basic body systems and their functions
ISBE Standard 20.A.3b: Identify and participate in activities associated with the components of health-related fitness.

Learning Objectives:

The student will be able to utilize a computer and the Internet while searching through a web quest to find information related to heart rate.

The student will be able to define heart rate (HR), resting HR, target HR zone, and max HR.

The student will be able to list three benefits that HR has on the human body.

The student will be able to calculate their resting HR, target HR, and maximum HR, by the end of completing the web quest activity.

Process:

Task #1:
For this task you will have to use the internet to find the proper definitions for: Heart Rate, Target/Working heart rate zone, Resting heart rate, Maximum heart rate. We have provided you with websites to get you started on your search. However, if you feel ambitious feel free to find your own websites. Just remember that they need to be credible.

Task #2:
For this task you will be asked to use the internet to assist you in finding three benefits of monitoring your heart rate. Please name the benefits, and how they affect your heart rate. Websites will be provided below, but you may use your own credible website if desired. Also what is one tool that can be used to help you keep track of your heart rate.

Task #3:
For this task you will be asked you to find your resting heart rate (pulse) and to calculate your different heart rates (target HR zone, Maximum HR). Make sure that you find your resting heart rate first because this will be used in all of the other calculations. We have provided you with different websites to aid you in your calculations. Please do not use your own websites for these calculations.

Task #4:
For this task you will be asked to run in place, with a partner, for 5 minutes. After you have completed this, use the skills and knowledge that you have acquired through this web quest to determine your current HR. Then you will need to list and describe where/if this number falls in your target heart rate zone.

Evaluation:

Create a poster that exhibits to us how heart rate is important in your everyday life. Include the findings, from the web quest, of your different heart rates somewhere in the poster. Be Creative!! Ask if you have any questions about what you should include.
This will be worth 30 pts.

Once the assignment is completed, we will be having a class discussion about the web quest. Please be thinking of your likes and dislikes of the assignment, and what you think could be done differently.
